Some amenities are way above its price class
The Vienna rococo decor is an acquired taste, but this property is spotless. Everything is in good shape, very clean, nothing broken down. I visit a lot of 4-star hotels with beat-up elevators, but the elevators here are are perfect.
There are currently no other reviews on this property, but I noticed that a lot of reviewers are giving poor marks to other Vienna International Hotels. Apparently this is because the travelers are used to getting 4-star service. Well, I think it is totally inappropriate to judge a 2-star hotel by 4-star criteria. This particular chain actually advertises that it offers amenities beyond the 2-star level, and I can fully confirm this.
Let's remember what a typical 2-star hotel is in Asian countries. It is either a somewhat above average workingman's hotel, where you would be very uncomfortable as a foreigner. Or it is an old, beat-up tourist hotel that's quite a turnoff. This particular Vienna hotel is awesome, by contrast. Quite new, spacious, adequate facilities, pleasant service (although not great in English).
Our room was large, comfortable, and super-clean. The only economizing that I found is that the dressers lack drawers. But apparently this is common in China.
A huge breakfast buffet is offered, including an excellent coffee which is made by an espresso machine (but they do not give you lattes). All the food items have nameplates which also contain English, so you can figure out what you are getting.
The rooms have excellent HVAC systems with a good thermostat and are nearly noisefree. I have stayed at many 4-star hotels with rattly window units that were a nuisance. Sleeping at the Vienna was perfect and quiet.
There is a gigantic, spotless lobby, with adequate seating. The on-site restaurant is operated by separately and you have to enter from the outside. The hotel has no bar. They did used to have a coffee bar, but that one does not operate any more. A small gift shop (mostly little snack items) is open right off the front desk.
You should note however that this property is a 1.5 hours taxi ride (50 miles) away from the center of Shanghai. So please don't come here if you have come to Shanghai for sightseeing. The taxis in China are not expensive, but a ride to downtown will still cost you USD50 or so. I stayed here in connection with a conference which was taking place at the hotel, so I was fully okay with the arrangements, but you should know that the place is "out in the middle of nowhere." Actually, it's in a "new city" which is at the extreme far-off edge of the metropolis.
Since you won't be staying at a 4 star property, you should come prepared for translation. Before you leave home, download Google Translate onto you phone, including the needed off-line dictionaries. You can then use this to translate text, and you can also type things in and show the phone to staff if needed.
