Lovely stay at Le Chatenet

The owner’s were very helpful when trying to get in contact before our stay, accomodating and problem solving-oriented.
When we arrived we were greeted with warmth and kindness. A short introduction to the house and grounds and they helped us book a table for dinner the same evening, which turned out to be an excellent choice.
Lovely breakfast both mornings, slow but with continuous food offerings from the kitchen. The scrambled eggs with truffle were well worth the extra money!
William, the owner, cooked for us and the other guests, a delicious five course meal, which with the wine, ca 3-4 glasses each, cost 65 € per person, a reasonable price if one compares it with restaurants in the area.
The grounds are beautiful and a walk is definitely a must. The swimming pool is clean and refreshing. The rooms and adjoining bathrooms we had were clean. There was no AC, but closing the windows and blinds during the day and opening them in the evening worked just fine.
One thing I will tell fellow travellers is that this is a guest house and not a hotel, so keep that in mind. We were very happy with our stay and can definitely recommend it!

Romantic place with large grounds where children (and parents) can enjoy themselves.

Fairytale place, a paradise for children. We came here by chance, fleeing the Normandy rain. We found a place where everything is possible and nothing is required and where we didn't want to leave. William and Anne were so relaxed to be around and chatted not only with us, but also with our children, including our son with an intellectual disability. Breakfast was a great feast every morning. Such a beautifully set table with all kinds of homemade delicacies... And on the last evening William cooked for us. It took a while before it was on the table, but everything was incredibly tasty. Our daughter stayed in the run with the goats until the last moment.
Moreover, Brantome is also a fairytale-like town with all kinds of nice restaurants. Brantome is quite busy, but you won't notice that at Le Chatenet (which can be reached via a nice walking path from the village).
We will remember this place forever and will definitely come back.

Great Stay, Super Host

I stayed at Le Chatenet with my family. William was really helpful before and during our stay. We spent an afternoon listening to music and he cooked a BBQ which was delicious. The house and the garden are grand without being formal, this made our stay all the more wonderful as we felt at home and were able to enjoy ourselves by the pool and in the clubhouse in the most leisurely manner. The breakfast served on the terrace is copious and beautifully prepared. I'm looking forward to return for a longer stay as this is a jewel of a place.

Dream place to personal NIGHTMARE

I’ve booked this property through a very popular booking site and the next day hotel owners called me and spoke to me for a long 45 minutes, asking a lot of personal questions in a “friendly” way. At the end of our conversation they asked me to cancel my booking and send them a 200€ euro as a deposit so that they wouldn’t pay the booking site commission fees. They said that they have a garden room for me which wasn’t available on the booking site and that they said they would send me photos of it which they never did. The booking was for me and my son and then my daughter was also added. We agreed on 4 days for 600€ for 3 of us and they told me they have a surprise for me before we arrived. We stayed in a room with one extra little room inside. On the day of check out William insisted that I pay 100€ extra for the “surprise room” he decided to give us, he said that he changed our room and we should appreciate it because this room was bigger, I never asked for that room, they never told me beforehand they instead say they have a “surprise” for us. When I questioned this unexpected price difference he started shouting at me in front of my children which was traumatising, he lifted his finger on my face and tried to intimidate me, he said that I should pay the extra or I’ll miss my train and that I was cheap and he even mentioned which country I come from to make a racist remark. This was truly traumatic experience for me and my children. William was a calculated, scary and mentally not balanced person. I have started an official complaint with that booking site and will follow up actions. I do not care about the 100€ extra William tried to charge me, this was about integrity and principles. The hotel was run down, the pool was dirty with full of bugs and flys but we still enjoyed our stay until and the owner, William tried to charge us extra and lost his temper and made a fool out of himself in front of everyone, he tried but failed to scare me!

In the name of truth
You booked a double room for 2 adults and a child through a booking site;
We contacted you to ascertain that you would be three and to tell you about the €25 extra for an extra bed;
We agreed to keep the price low but offered you the garden room with twin beds when you told us it would be you and your son only;
You added your daugther, we restated the extra charge for the extra bed; you the said ‘never mind about the extra bed’ which meant to us that your daughter would not be attending;
You advised us that your daughter would be attending so we gave you the family room which was the cheapest option and you then also had a suite and more comfort, the only room with AC in which you occupied three beds.
Upon departure you argued about the price and left us with an outstanding bill saying you wouldn’t pay more, that it was your choice whether you slept with two children above the age of 7 in one bed, that we are sorry to say is not something that we find acceptable in our house.
Prices are per night:
Double room with a double bed 160x190cm: €165 (plus extra bed €25) Total: €190
Double garden superior room twin beds 100x200cm: €180 (plus extra bed €25) Total: €205
Family Suite 180x190cm with children’s room single beds 90x200cm €185- Cheapest option,
As we stated to you, we offer a 10% discount for three nights or more.
You paid €150 per night for the Family Suite and refused to pay the difference;
Breakfasts are €15 per adult and €12.50 per child
You did not pay for your breakfasts, nor your children’s, one of whom did not attend breakfast;
Home-made charcuterie and cheese board for hungry children, although we are a BnB and do not offer lunch €20 per person;
You did not pay for the lunch.
There is an outstanding balance still.
William told you we do not haggle and asked you to leave.

Far from safe

Ive stayed at Le Chatenet with my husband and our 4 children in July. First problem with this place is guests are not given room keys and hence its not possible to lock your doors whether you are out or you are in sleeping! Our 3 children aged 14, 11 and 5 was supposed to stay at a different room than us and as much as i tried to convince the owners to provide us with room keys, I was told NO every time. My other 3 children ended up staying in our room, on the floor during our whole stay and we still payed for two rooms! The swimming pools filtering system was off during the day, the water was foggy and full of bugs and flys, it was disgusting, my 2 daughters ended up having UTI's and we were precribed antibiotics after the doctor visit. Also the air conditioners in the rooms had the filter change flash on the whole time so we couldnt even use the AC's. When we wanted to stay for lunch at the hotel we were only given cheese plates with bread. Ive also witnessed William the owner with one of the guests being vhostile during her check out, he was shouting at this lady and callign her names in front of her kids and the lady looked distressed. All in all i regret staying at terrible Le Chatenet, unfortunately its been maintaned in a cheap way not up to the standards that the place deserves to be. Not recommending at all!!
