The view from the room was very nice, the room itself was very clean and quiet so I was able to have a peaceful and relaxing stay, though it would have been nice if it were a little more well lit, but overall very satisfactory. The meals provided were delicious, I was happy to be able to sample many different dishes and the service was amazing but the portion was a little too much for me, maybe half of what was provided would’ve been just perfect but nonetheless it was an amazing experience.

There are few foreign tourists visiting Japan, making this a quiet and relaxing inn.

Beppu has the most hot springs in Japan in terms of both the number of hot springs and the amount of hot spring water it produces. Among them, eight hot springs with ancient origins (Hamawaki Onsen, Beppu Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Hotta Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Shibaishi Onsen, and Kamekawa Onsen) are called the Beppu Hatto (Beppu Eight Hot Springs). The inn where I stayed this time, [Ryotei Matsubaya], is located in the Kankaiji Onsen area, one of the Beppu Hatto.
The inn is located on the slope of a mountain on the west side of Beppu City, on a hill overlooking the mountains to the west and Beppu City and Beppu Bay to the east.
The inn was built on a steep slope with no shops nearby, so a car was essential to go out after arriving at the inn.
[Ryotei Matsubaya] has two types of guest room buildings: the old building [Oka no Sou], which has 10 standard rooms, and the new building [Tsuki no Sou], which has 8 guest rooms.
The new building, Tsukinosou, has three types of rooms, which are designed to be a new ryokan style: Stylish Modern, Japanese Modern, and Maisonette. The price is a little higher than the Japanese-Western style rooms in Okanosou.
This time, I stayed in a Maisonette room in the new building, Tsukinosou. The price varies slightly depending on the season, but the price for this stay was 48,000 yen per person for one night with two meals.
The Maisonette room is 100 square meters in size, with a living room, a Japanese-style room, and a daybed sofa by the window on the lower floor. There are chairs on the balcony, so you can relax while looking out over Beppu city.
The upper floor has a twin bedroom, an indoor bath, and an open-air bath, and to be honest, it was too big for two people.
From the room and the open-air bath, you can see Beppu city and the tourist attraction Global Tower right in front of you, and beyond that you can see Beppu Tower and Beppu Bay. The night view was also beautiful. Apparently there isn't much of a view from Oka no Sou.
The open-air bath on the upper floor can be accessed directly from the indoor bath and is about the size of two tatami mats. It is installed on a balcony, but there is a privacy screen so there is no need to worry about being seen from elsewhere.
In addition to the open-air baths in the rooms, the inn also has five shared baths in Tsuki no Sou and Oka no Sou, all of which can be used free of charge and without a reservation. The types of baths are:
Private open-air baths••••••2
Private semi-open-air baths•••1
Indoor family bath••••••1
Large baths (separate for men and women)••••1
Common baths are available from 15:00 to 24:00 in the afternoon
6:00 to 08:00 the next morning
(Some baths are open until 09:00)
I went to one of the private semi-open-air baths, Yakushi no Yu, which was carved out of a large monolith and was very large enough for about 10 people. From the bath, you could see the beautiful night view of Beppu.
The hot spring was very pleasant to the touch, but the temperature of the hot spring was quite high, so I had to add water to cool it down before I could enter.
Meals are served in the dining area in the building for both breakfast and dinner. It is a semi-private room, so you can eat at your leisure without worrying about other people's eyes.
The menu for dinner this time is as follows:
●Seasonal assortment
●Clam shells
●Spiny lobster and Seki mackerel sashimi
●Stone-grilled abalone
●Wagyu beef tail and radish stew
●New bamboo shoots, shrimp with cherry blossom leaves, namafu (grilled gluten), deep-fried dashi
●Seafood salad
●Japanese black beef with sesame sauce, bracken, bamboo shoots, angelica tree
●White rice, pickles
●Fruit salad, sakura mochi
Seafood from the Bungo Channel and mountain produce from Oita were served one by one, so they were delicious and kept warm.
Breakfast also had a wide variety of dishes, and we were able to choose between rice or porridge, which was nice and delicious.

My impression after staying there was that it felt like staying in a slightly stylish apartment room for me, who lives in the city, and I thought the room would have a more Japanese inn-like atmosphere or the atmosphere of a hot spring inn. However, this is a matter of my personal preference, so I think it's a great place to stay with your family, with an open-air bath in the room, a large room with a good view, five shared and private hot springs, and delicious food.
The old building has also been renovated and refurbished, so please choose a room according to your preferences.
The inn is located on the side of a small hill on the outskirts of Beppu city. It's not a good location for going out at night, so I recommend it for people who want to finish sightseeing before checking in and spend the night relaxing at the inn.
The values, tastes, and sensibilities of travel are all different for each person. You can't rely on the tastes of others, including myself, and you can't rely on reviews on travel sites at all.
One of the joys of traveling is to find an inn that suits your tastes, based on the honest opinions of people who leave reviews.
Beppu has great hot springs and many things to see. Please visit Beppu once.
