A truly unhappy experience!
A truly unhappy experience!
When we arrived at the hotel, in the early evening, we were taken to a first floor accommodation in their annex building, I believe the room name was Lanhydrock.
Our first observation was that the front and rear windows of the room were open, on what might be described as a ‘fresh’ day. Our initial thoughts were that the room was simply being aired, ready for new occupants.
However, once we were left in the room, we quickly realised there was a damp problem. This was evident due to a number of reasons and confirmed by the presence of a couple of ‘passive’ dehumidifiers located by the side of the wardrobe unit.
To improve the situation, rather than complain of the conditions, we simply asked for the central heating to be turned on.
Unfortunately, the very helpful female staff member and her assistant could not manage to induce the system to work currently and the room remained very cool and somewhat unpleasant.
Due to the adverse experience we chose to curtail our two day stay and have breakfast the next day, then leave.
At this point I should say that I have recently retired from a professional position in the construction industry. My fifty years plus in the industry equipped me ample experience to recognise the cause of the physical conditions which were manifest in the room.
I was also able to recognise some immediate issues concerning why the heating system was likely not to work properly.
I mention my qualification to comment on the situation simply because when informing the management of our decision to leave earlier than planned the gentleman, who I took to be the manager/ proprietor, was extremely brusque and most dismissive of my concerns.
Indeed, he made a point of countering my comments by informing me that the “walls of the bedroom” had recently been decorated, therefore there could be no damp problem in the room.
My only observation regarding the bedroom wall, would simply be to mention that the light dusting of salts, evident behind the wardrobe, would not usually be found on fresh paintwork. Salts come to the surface as a formerly wet wall starts to dry out and not associated with paintwork drying.
Also the high level of rusting on the fins, within the double panelled steel radiator, also provides clear evidence of damp conditions in the room. It also points to the heating system not having been in operation for a long period whilst the room was damp.
In addition to our concern about the damp, the state of decoration in the bathroom made the place feel very dingy. Paintwork on ceiling and woodwork was peeling and heavily cracked in places.
Put all together we felt uncomfortable and really didn’t wish to stay for more than the one night.
Notwithstanding my comments, it would not be a balanced review if I did not mention some positive elements.
Generally the room was clean, albeit very tired and need of updating. The bed linen was very clean and the bed comfortable. In addition both the evening meal and breakfast were each provided in pleasant areas. Also that the food and general ambience was equally as pleasant.
However, in conclusion, I certainly would not entertain revisiting the hotel, particularly given the prevailing view that the customer’s concerns were certainly not wanted by the higher management.
I cannot foresee any positive improvement in the foreseeable future.
